Gold as a Long-Term Investment

Gold has been used as a store of value for over 5,000 years. Unlike stocks or bonds, it produces no dividends or interest — its value comes from scarcity, global demand, and its role as a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation.

Inflation Hedge

When inflation rises and the purchasing power of currencies falls, gold tends to hold or increase its real value. Central banks hold gold reserves for exactly this reason.

Portfolio Diversification

Gold often moves independently of stocks and bonds. Adding even a small allocation (5–15%) to a portfolio can reduce overall volatility during market downturns.

Currency Devaluation

In countries experiencing rapid currency depreciation, gold priced in local currency rises sharply — protecting purchasing power when savings accounts cannot.

No Counterparty Risk

Physical gold has no issuer, no counterparty, and cannot go bankrupt. This makes it distinct from shares, bonds, or bank deposits in times of financial stress.

Understanding Gold Investment Returns

Unlike stocks or bonds, gold generates no dividends, interest, or rental income — its entire return comes from price appreciation alone. That makes ROI on gold conceptually simple: the percentage gain or loss between what you paid per troy ounce and what it's worth today, converted into your currency at each point in time. This calculator does that conversion for you, pulling the historical USD/USD exchange rate for your purchase date rather than assuming today's rate applied back then, which matters a lot if your currency has moved significantly against the dollar since you bought. Right now, 24K gold in USD trades at $4,651.60 per troy ounce.

Total ROI and annualized ROI answer different questions. Total ROI tells you the overall percentage gain since purchase — useful for knowing your total profit, but misleading for comparing investments held over different time periods. Annualized ROI smooths that out into a "per year" rate, so a 40% gain over 10 years (roughly 3.4% annualized) can be compared fairly against a 40% gain over 2 years (roughly 18.3% annualized) — the second is a dramatically better result even though the total gain looks identical.

Gold's historical role in a portfolio has been as a hedge rather than a growth engine: it tends to hold value or rise when inflation is high, real interest rates are negative, or confidence in fiat currencies weakens — conditions under which stocks and bonds often struggle simultaneously. Over long periods it has generally trailed equities in total return, but with a very different risk profile — gold's price swings are typically smaller than a single volatile stock, and it has no bankruptcy risk since it isn't anyone's liability.

A few things this calculator can't account for: it compares spot prices, not what you actually paid at a jeweler (which usually includes a retail premium above spot), and it doesn't factor in storage, insurance, or transaction costs if you bought and plan to sell physical gold rather than paper gold. For a more complete picture of what you'd get selling physical jewelry or coins today, pair this with the scrap gold calculator, and check the price history archive if you're unsure of your exact purchase-date rate.
